Gordon Coppuck designed the McLaren M15 in 1969 after McLaren had decided to enter the 1970 Indy 500.
The engine was based around the Garrett Turbocharged 2.65 litre 4 cylinder Meyer-Drake unit developing 750 bhp at 9000 rpm.
Two prototypes were ready for qualifying to be driven by Chris Amon and Denny Hulme. Unfortunately Amon couldn't adapt to the special driving technique of the oval circuit and Hulme was injured in a freak accident when fuel was drawn out of the filler by the airflow and ignited on the hot turb-charger.
